The Christmas edition of “Joseph,” the quarterly magazine of the Pennsylvania Province of the Oblates of St Joseph, features (on Page 3) a summary of our recent Men’s Conference held at the OSJ Seminary in Laflin. We are truly grateful to Fr Paul McDonnell OSJ for his hospitality and support of the Guardian of the Redeemer CMF.

It is with a grateful heart that I write to thank you all for your prayers for my surgery yesterday. I had some growths removed from my vocal cords, and now I wait and hope that there is no cancer. I seem to have come through the operation pretty well. To say that it is very sore swallowing is an understatement…thanks be to God for pain medication! I have to remain in silence [no talking for at least a week and limited for another two weeks or so]. Those around the rectory have told me: “it is an ill wind that blows no good.”
So I am in a listening posture. I can’t help but think of Walt’s recent post on “listening” from Fr. Dubay. It has already been an interesting day with no words. The silence is good. Words become much more meaningful when you are deprived of them. Lots to consider; and, I am sure that God is speaking to me now that I am not speaking. I am reminded of Psalm 46: 10
“Be still and know that I am God…”
