CATHOLIC MEN’S FELLOWSHIP

“As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:17
In September 2008, a lay apostolate dedicated to the evangelization and catechesis of Catholic men began in the Diocese of Scranton. It is known as the Guardian of the Redeemer Catholic Men’s Fellowship, and is an offshoot of the Catholic men’s movement that has been building momentum in our nation over the past decade or so. It is affiliated with the National Fellowship of Catholic Men, which works closely with similar groups in many dioceses in the United States. The Guardian of the Redeemer Catholic Men’s Fellowship is being coordinated by a Service Team led by Glenn Yanik, a layman from Gate of Heaven parish in Dallas.
The mission of the Guardian of the Redeemer Catholic Men’s Fellowship is to encourage and empower men to deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ, their families, their Church, their communities, other Catholic men, and to live their faith in every day life. The primary means of accomplishing this mission will be through small groups of men in parishes meeting regularly for prayer, scripture study, fellowship and adult faith formation. The apostolate is meant to complement and not compete with existing parish men’s groups.
The Guardian of the Redeemer Catholic Men’s Fellowship will serve primarily as a service group which will facilitate the start-up of parish men’s groups by:
- Providing training sessions for parish group leaders
- Offering men’s retreats, workshops and other gatherings of Catholic men
- Forming a network through which parish group leaders can build relationships
- Starting an annual men’s conference in our diocese in order to energize and inspire men to live out their Baptismal promises
In July 2010, The Guardian of the Redeemer Catholic Men’s Fellowship received this formal letter of support from Bishop Bambera. He personally reiterated his support for our efforts in the comments he addressed to us after celebrating Mass at our diocesan Catholic Men’s Day in October 2010.
We have placed the Guardian of the Redeemer Catholic Men’s Fellowship under the patronage of St. Joseph, the first Guardian of the Redeemer. We also ask the intercession of Pope John Paul II, who wrote an Apostolic Exhortation, Redemptoris Custos, on St. Joseph as Guardian of the Redeemer.
